History: The Old Charleston Jail was built in 1802 on the site of a former, hospital, poor house, and slave workhouse.

The Old City Jail was built in 1802 on the site of a former, hospital, poor house and slave workhouse. Both Confederate and Federal prisoners or war were held here during the Civil War. Slaves, murderers, traitors, and petty criminals were all also held, tortured, and executed at the gallows here. It is believed that as many as 10,000 people died on this property.

History: USS North Carolina ( nickname "Showboat") was the lead ship of her class of battleship and the fourth in the United States Navy to be named in honor of this U.S. state.

The USS North Carolina Battleship was the first new-construction U.S. battleship to enter service during World War II, participating in every major naval offensive in the Pacific theater to become the most decorated United States battleship of the war with 15 battle stars. At the time of her commissioning on 9 April 1941, she was considered the world’s greatest sea weapon. Armed with nine 16-inch/45 caliber guns in three turrets and twenty 5-inch/38 caliber guns in ten twin mounts, NORTH CAROLINA proved a formidable weapons platform.

History: Built in 1856 by George W. Adams and used as a stop on the underground railroad. Daytime tours are arranged by calling 740-221-4175.

This historic 29 room mansion was built in 1856 by abolitionist George W. Adams with the intent of using it as a stop along the underground railroad. It offered a many a slave a chance for freedom. Noted for having an abundance of paranormal activity to go with its rich history, both Ghost Hunters (Taps) and Ghost Adventures have investigated here recently.

Located in the heart of the city of Bedford. Avenel has been the centerpiece of social, cultural, and political life for over 150 years. Avenel is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and the Virginia Landmarks Register. SVPS was very excited and eager to investigate this beautiful, historic home!

Recently featured on Ghost Adventures as well as Paranormal State, the penitentiary is a huge draw for paranormal groups around the country.

Known as the fort that saved America, Fort Mifflin was originally built by the British in 1771. It is the site of the largest bombardment the North American continent has ever witnessed. In 1777, during the American Revolution, a five-week battle took place when the British Navy attacked Fort Mifflin on Mud Island. Civil war prisoners were kept at Fort Mifflin as well. Do tortured souls still linger within the walls of Fort Mifflin?

This former inn became a hospital early in the civil war, providing care for some 70,000 soldiers, both Confederate and Union. Many people insist that the hotel is haunted today. Could the souls of so many sick and wounded soldiers still roam the hotel and surrounding grounds. SVPS was very excited to be invited to participate on a joint investigation with Mark Higgins and his team, Spirit Search Paranormal Investigations.

This 1760s tavern and inn has a long history of hauntings over the years. At one time the house served as a french fort and trading post. It has been noted that there have been horse thieves hung on the property. Could they be the restless souls that wander the inn and tavern?

Built in 1827, this beautiful house (now a museum) was used as headquarters for Confederate General Stonewall Jackson in late April of 1862 during the civil war. It is from here it is said, that General Jackson planned his famous valley campaign, a military masterpiece. Our second investigation of this beautiful, historic house.

The family residing at this location wanted answers and documentation of unusual events that had been occuring in their home for some time. SVPS's investigation policy is that all investigations are confidential and kept private unless permission to post is granted by the client. In this case permission was granted to post data, experiences and our conclusion. Waverly Hills Sanatorium is known as one of the most notoriously haunted locations in the United States. Opened in 1910 and used to treat tubercolosis patients, it has been popularized on television as being one of the "most haunted" hospitals in the eastern United States, and was seen on ABC/FOX Family Channel's Scariest Places On Earth as well as VH1's Celebrity Paranormal Project. It was also seen on the Sci Fi Channel's Ghost Hunters.
