The Edgewood Plantation

Charles City, Va.

The beautiful Edgewood Plantation is located 28 miles outside of Williamsburg, Virginia in Charles City.
Edgewood was once a part of Berkeley Plantation, the ancestral home of U.S. Presidents William Henry and
Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.   Throughout its dramatic history, it has
served as a church, post office, telephone exchange, restaurant, nursing home and a signal post for the
Confederates to spy on McLellan's Army.    Dating circa 1849, this is a National & State regulated landmark.

Confederate Major-General Jeb Stuart stopped and had coffee here on way to Richmond, but the plantation is
best known for it's story of Lizzie Rowland.   Lizzie Rowland, who etched her name on an upstairs bedroom
window.   She died of a broken heart after waiting in vain for her lover to return from the war.   Legend has it
and many people believe that she still waits for him, watching from her upstairs window.
